The Day Estate
The Day Estate north of the Old Brompton Road was owned by the Dyson family since 1661. This is the land on which Hereford Square, Breckin Place, Rosary Gardens and Wetherby Place now stand.
The land was originally known as the ‘Six Acres’ although it’s just under 10 acres. he estate also included a three acre field to the south of Old Brompton Road which is now the northern end of Drayton Gardens.
The last Dyson mortgaged the land to Walter Dodemead and, when he defaulted on the loan, Dodemead acquired the land in 1735. He left it to his three daughters, a third each. Two of the daughters, Anne and Susanna, gave up their interests to the third sister, Elizabeth. Meanwhile in 1743 Benjamin Day, the son of a worsted weaver in Norwich, married Anne. When Elizabeth died in 1772, she left the land to James Frapwell Day, the son of Benjamin Day and her sister Anne. When James died in 1819, his nephew, also James Day inherited it.
Since then it has passed down through the Day family.
