Cornwall Mews South runs in two sections on the south side of Cornwall Gardens. Both sections are cobbled cul-de-sacs entered under large stone arch. The eastern section is longer and many of the houses have creeper growing on the front of the houses, pots of shrubs in front and flat roof terraces. This is part of the Broadwood Estate. To provide stabling for the main houses in Cornwall Gardens, a number of mews were constructed as part of the Cornwall Gardens development. The Broadwood family who owned the land awarded the contract for building much of the north side of Cornwall Gardens and part of the south side to the partnership of Thomas Guy Welchman and Robert Gale. Welchman and Gale built Cornwall Mews West at the far north west corner. Most of their work in this area was carried out between 1871 and 1876. Cornwall Mews South was built by John Wilkins, running behind the south side of Cornwall Gardens on either side of Grenville Place. |
